Wool is a natural material and super-durable therefore an eco-friendly option.
In 2006 Isabel Costa and João Tomás decided to go through a process of restoration of an old wool factory in tin Serra da Estrela, Portugal.
They kept the machines of the nineteenth century, recycled some patterns from the old books that they still use today in some blankets and began to colour the burel fabric that until then only existed in the original colours of wool. They put the old loom masters teaching the younger ones. An industrial heritage was saved and the knowledge of wool crafts passed on to new generations.
They increased the social, ecological sustainability and the conservation of the mountain region. The sheep that run through it lead by the shepherds lend them the wool twice a year. Today Burel Factory is the biggest employer in Vila de Manteigas.
